Scrapbook of America: Love and Skye

Skye Parrot, a photographer and publisher, and jeweler Pamela Love have been on the road together for years. From the wildest of carefree rides of youth, to making babies and businesses, marriages, breakups, successes and failure, they share an intimate portrait of friendship as part of Voyage D'etudes Scrapbook of America.

The best thing about traveling with Skye?

The conversations on long car rides

The worst thing she did on a trip?

Well we both peed in the back of Prada Marfa. That was bad of both of us. Also she got a speeding ticket on the border of Mexico and she was going like 30 above the speed limit! They thought we were drug smugglers. That was fun.

A smell that reminds you of a journey together?

The smell of the desert.

The most hilarious thing she said?

I remember a particular road trip where we were both going through almost identical relationship crises at the same time. And pretty much everything she said was hilarious. But I can't remember exactly what she said anymore. Whatever either of us said was probably not nice enough to print here.

The smartest thing she did?

We once got to shoot inside the hotel room where John Lennon and Yoko Ono had their love-in while we were traveling in Canada. I don't know how she managed to get us In there but that was pretty smart.

The worst things ate or drank on the road?

A lot of questionable Tex Mex.

The happiest day?

Running around Marfa when it was off season and feeling like we were the only people in the entire town.  Also swimming in a rooftop pool in my underwear in the middle of the night in Toronto while it was pouring rain.

The best thing about traveling with Pam?

The best thing about traveling with Pam is that she is always willing to stop to take a good picture.

The craziest thing she did on the trip?

On our trip to Marfa we got pulled over by the Texas highway patrol. The car had clothes all over it because we were shooting as we drove. He definitely thought we were insane and probably up to no good.

A song that reminds you of the journey together?

Anything by Neil Young, since I think we both could listen to him all the way across the country.

Has traveling together changed over the years?

The last trip we took together was to Nashville and we had my four year old daughter with us, so that’s different. She’s crazy about Pam and I think the two of them spent more time together than Pam and I did.

The weirdest thing you ever did together?

Does peeing behind Prada Marfa count? And photographing each other doing it?
